Dune is the very first dune game [retro review]
In 1992, a game was released, which forever changed the RTS – Dune II genre … And you never wondered why II? The thing is that the Virgin Interactive publishing house instructed to make a game based on Dunes at once to two developers: Cryo Interactive and Westwood Studios. Dune from Cryo came out the first, which is why Westwood was forced to add number 2 to the name of its game.
Although Dune (which is just Dune) came out earlier, it did not gain such popularity as the “second part”. And there was something to look at.
The plot of the game is based on the book of Frank Herbert “Dune”.
Emperor Shaddam IV sends the house of Atreides to rule the distant planet Arrakis (almost completely covered with desert, hence the second name – the dune) and has the obligation to extract spice – the most valuable substance in the universe. The situation is complicated by the fact that the whole north of the planet was reduced by the house of Kharkonnenov – sworn enemies of Atreides. (This is not the only difference between the plot of the game from the book. Over the time of discrepancies, it becomes even more.)
By the genre, this is a first -person settlement, mixed with a global strategy in real time … No, this brief description is clearly not enough.
We start the game in the palace. From the very beginning they have neither the army nor workers for the extraction of spice. Therefore, the main character – Paul Atwesides, the son of the Duke of Summer, sets off at his ornithopter (air of the movement) to lure to their side of the indigenous inhabitants of the planet – freezers living in well -disguised caves that cannot be found so easy.
As soon as you can persuade Freemanov to royal valley casino sister sites go to your service, they can start giving orders. At first, Freemen agrees only to the prey of spice. Moreover, the number of spices collected directly depends on their degree of motivation.
Only over time they will be able to get Harvesters and ornithopterers for more efficient production.
Gi-guludes are of particular danger. Without ornithopter, there is a great chance that Harvester will absorb a huge worm, which is why it will come to the new one (you can try to order to look for a draw, but this does not always work.)
Also, do not forget to constantly move your workers from the developed areas to new.
Even further in the plot (which, by the way, moves only thanks to dialogues), Freemanas can be trained by military art, then to send them to protect their gaiters or to espionage, which is needed to conquer the Harconner territories.
Success in battles depends on the equipment, quantity and experience of your troops. If the battle ended unsuccessfully, then it will be possible to repel captive units.
Over time, it turns out that Paul Atrades is a local Messiah, Muad’dib. This is manifested in the opening gifts: visions about important events (when the screen floats in the game – this is not a bug, but just the beginning of a vision), distance orders of freemen and even in the use of giant worms as a vehicle.
The main task of the player is to complete the storyline and capture the capital of the enemy.
To do this, you need to constantly balance between the economy and the army: the supply of spice will stop – the emperor will punish you, there will be too large an army – Harconenna will begin to advance excessively.
Still complicated by a constantly growing number of subordinates awaiting more and more orders.
Alternative finale is also provided. If you succeed in improving the ecology of the planet, then by the end of the game Arrakis turns into a flowering garden. Only now we will have to wage war.
A little about the visual component: it is beautiful. All landscapes, all the characters, all shifts of day and night are created in conscience and are designed in a single atmospheric style, which largely repeats the 1984 film adaptation style.
